I was just reading the article Electronic Fuel Injection for the Slant Six by Bob DiBiase. It was quite interesting and informative. I was wondering if this application would work on a Buick 231 V6? I have put this engine in my 63 CJ5 and would like to covert it to fuel injection?

I believe the Buick 231 is the very engine that Bob got the EFI stuff from. You can swap all of that stuff directly, probably including manifold and TB, onto your engine from a junked car.

I agree with Lou. This would probably be a direct "bolt on". I did get everything from an '85 GM 3.8L (231 cu. in.) V6. Cubic inches = 61 X liters. This reminds me of a good one I heard recently: "If God had intended for us to use the metric measuring system he would have had ten apostles".

I am thinking of doing the EFI for my 170 rebuild project. Would the GM 3.8 litre motor setup work OK for the 170, or would using a 2.8 GM system be basically the same as system documented in the article? I haven't heard too many EFI projects for the slant, but I'm itching to try this.

>I have a friend who's the head troubleshooter for one of the local GM dealerships. He and I are going to eventually going to work on a TBI slant conversion (cheap and simple swap with proper adapterplate to go with the HEI/MSD ignition for those wanting daily drivers/can't find a good 1 barrel carb problem). according to him, chevy dropped the TBI when they dropped the 2.8 and replaced it with the 3.1 EFI.

Hope that answers some questions about what motor you'll be grabbing parts from.

I think I would go with the GM 2.8L multi-port set-up for the 170 SL6. However, I also think that the 3.8L set-up would probably work well because of the self-tuning capabilities of the Mass Air Flow sensor. I guess it depends on how certain you want to be that everything will be optimized and how confident you are about breaking ground on a "new" set-up. The ECM and throttle body are not the same for the 2.8L and the 3.8L and the injectors may also be different. There are also some differences in the wiring diagrams. If you get the Chilton Celebrity/Century/Ciera / 6000 1985-95 repair manual (28360) you can compare these two systems and determine the donor car if you decide to go with the 2.8L set-up. The 2.8L with a distributor and MAF sensor was only used in 1985 and 1986. Beginning in 1987 they used a crank trigger although they were still batch fired and never sequential (no cam position sensor). The MAF was used through 1988 and then changed to the speed density system (MAP sensor) in 1989. I believe that was the last production year for the 2.8L. The ECM that you will need for the '85 '86 2.8L is 1226870. You can check that out yourself at <A HREF="http://www.cruzers.com/~ludis/c3xref.ht ... ef.html</A>. Good Luck and keep us posted.
