 Post subject: HEI Conversion Questions
PostPosted: Wed Nov 14, 2001 6:40 pm
I am totally clueless about my '71 Dart's ignition. Can someone explain how to switch from my stock points style distributor to a electronic distributor that can hook up to a MSD ignition. How would i wire such a setup? I would like to put in a junk yard HEI electronic distributor and an MSD ignition and coil. I would like to anna the MSD Boost Timing Master when i rig up a turbo setup. Please Help me with this conversion!!

If you are going with the MSD, just use a Mopar electronic ignition distributor (look for one in a '73-up car with two wires coming out of it into a little black connector). The MSD unit comes with instructions on how to wire it up to get a trigger signal from the mopar distributor.

Cheers,

Lou

You can actually keep your points style distributor if you go with the MSD ignition. The wiring diagram for this is available at <A HREF="http://www.msdignition.com">www.msdignition.com</A>. Click on "INSTRUCTION DOWNLOAD" then "MSD 6 SERIES" and "MSD SYSTEMS Installing to Points/Amplifier Style Ignition". When you use the points distributor with a MSD ignition the points no longer carry a heavy current and will last a very long time.

The only reason for going with the 4 pin HEI module would be to save some money by not using the MSD box ($130), but then you would lose all of the advantages of the MSD and its much higher energy output. And, you do have to convert to an electronic distributor to use a HEI.

I have considered using the seven pin HEI, along with the MSD ignition, with my EFI. I might do this to take advantage of the timing control and anti-knock features, especially if I go with a turbo. You could probably also use this seven pin module with a carburetor/turbo combination. But, you would also need an ECM, knock sensor, Electronic Spark Control (ESC), and an electronic distributor. See <A HREF="http://www.slantsix.org/articles/dibias ... chm.jpg</A> for the wiring diagram.

If you want to use an HEI conversion on your mopar, be sure to visit <A HREF="http://liquid2k.com/duster318/tech/hei. ... ei.html</A> The whole conversion is detailed right there. You use a Mopar Electronic Distributor with it.
