 Post subject: High torque slant six

I was wondering if anyone has a recipe for a high torque rather than a high horsepower slant six. This is to be used in a 1980 2wd d100 with a 833 overdrive, 3.55 differential. I am looking for gas mileage and more pulling power. Any ideas would be appreciated.

A "Long Rod" 232 (o/s bore)and adding stroke to the crank of you have the $$$.
A short overlap cam and a long "ram style" intake would do the trick.

Some minor head porting work focusing on voloicity should be done along with improved exhaust.

What kind of cam profile to maximise torque at 2500 RPM with stock valve size?

I would use a factory "stock" cam grind (profile), the factory 232º has only 8 degrees of overlap!
If you plan to use a 2 bbl, use at least the 241, 236 - 16º overlap cam. Let's face it, the factory did a lot of dyno testing and arrive at the cams they put in stock SL6's for a reason, they were shooting for a good idle and lot's of low RPM power.

Trouble today is you are not real sure what the cam regrinder's profile really is, it could be some other grind put an a SL6 cam core. (get a read-out on the profile)

I am going to be getting a 4wd 66 powerwagon shortly...I was also thinking of ideas for high torque. Would it be crazy to use a hyperpack on a truck? I think the long runners would promote low and midrange torque.-anyway I also wanted to look into stroking like you mentioned. I live in Pa and none of the machine shops in the area will even think of stroking the crank for less than $1000 plus-and nobody has time to do it. Doug you mentioned $500-is this an old dollar amount?? has anybody else created a 260 cuin. slant yet besides doug.-How is it holding up??? I was thinking that a 260-w dutra duals and a large 2 bbl w/ small 260degree? cam would do nice along w/some head work. Would I be able to mail you $$$ for a crank???. The truck has 4.10 axles-4spd- and 33 in tires. Any input would be appreciated. as always thank you for the help.

Why not turbo it instead? Might be less money
in the long run than a stroker, and maybe a
good bit more power. You'll have plenty of
underhood room.

I am looking to turbo my 74 swinger right now. I love the idea of boost. But i am going to tow w/the truck.. everybody says I can not tow/wturbo because I will melt pistons, etc. If I could keep the pyro temps down that would be fine. I was also looking at junkyard scavenging a blower of supercoupe or 3.8 GM. Any input would be appreciated

You could limit boost while towing and run alky injection to lower combustion temps. Good exhaust and seats would be a must. If you watched egt, you could get by.
I've looked at the 3.8 GM superchargers, as well as the 6 cyl ford tbird blowers......don't know how complex they would be.

I am leaning toward the belt driven sys or stroker for simplicity-if I boost-about 5-6 psi would be plenty-I don't want to have the expense and hassle of alky injection-I am very unknowledgeable in this area.-any ideas would be appreciated. I want simple reliable power but is always available.-the truck will be daily driven so reliability takes priority-but of course it must be an SL6- Thanks guys
