 Post subject: 8 3/4 rear housing I.D.
PostPosted: Wed Nov 21, 2001 5:40 pm
I have the opportunity to purchase a 8 3/4 rear axle housing for my 66 cuda but I need to know if it is an a-body unit. The casting numbers are 2881489 A (or a triangle). Can anyone tell me if this is the right rear for a a-body?

Thanks

I have a '741 in my Dart, the '489 is one of the
newer center sections and the strongest I've heard. I got a '489 from a C-body, but I've seen
these in trucks. Just measure it.

If I remember right from my mopar lore 489's are the strongest and most desired, they are supposed to be stock for late Barracudas and Dart/Demon/Duster's up to 1972.
They are one of the most common truck pumpkin I've seen too.

good luck,

If I am reading this correct you want to know the width of the housing. I believe a stock A-Body 8 3/4 is 52.5 inches from housing flange to housing flange. The number you listed is the hogshead case number...489 means it has the largest(and strongest) pinion shaft. The other numbers are 41 and 42.

Okay, here's my next question; the guy is selling the axle housing (the actual case for the axles that the pumpkin bolts to)and the pumpkin, but no brake hardware, axles, or gears. Is this a good buy? How hard is it to find C-body axles and have them cut down and resplined? How hard is it to find and install a set of gears and a posi unit? Are there any parts interchange problems I should be aware of?
The only experience I have is with 7 1/4 and 8 1/4 rears. I know nothing about 8 3/4s, except the gears are supposed to be easy to change.

Thanks!

Reed, the A-body units are 55.6" on track width (axle face to axle face) and 43" center to center on the spring perches. 489 case is the easiest to get gears for. Sure Grip units are supposed to be interchangeable between the different cases. 489 came with a clutch type unit and 741 and 742 had cone style. The clutch type is supposed to be better. Dennis

The best way to ID an empty 8 3/4 A-Body housing is to measure for the 52" flange to flange and the 43" spring perch centers. One other tip is if you find a yellow paint "A" swipped onto the rear "moon" back of the housing. (Just look for the yellow paint, the factory worker's penmanship was bad) You will have to wipe off the mud & grease to find it and you are out of luck if the unit has been repainted.

As for the 8 3/4, 1965 and newer stuff all interchanges so you can get either the 10", 11" drums or even a rear disk set-up. (watch the lug patterns, I can think of 4 different ones)
An 8 3/4 is worth the effort, it's a strong unit with easy gear changes.

Hey everybody, thanks! I think I will get it and slowly gather parts to install it in my Cuda. Someday I will actually get the car running so I can USE all this good stuff.

The 8 3/4 is easy to change gears, but it's also very strong, even stronger than an OEM Ford 9 inch. You can pick up a set of 3.91 gears and another with 2.76, and swap them in less than an hour. Many trucks and vans have the Sure Grip.
You can even buy a brand new alloy center section from MP.

Moser can help you get the axles resplined :

You can use C-body or truck/van axles which are
not necked-down, pretty easy to find. Every set I've pulled were fine. Just make sure you get 4 1/2" bolt circles as the trucks and Imperials are larger. Here's the advice Moser gave me:

>We can respline some c-body axles to fit in the >A-Body rears. The axles you send in to us need >to be at least 31" long from the face of the >flange to the end of the splines in order for us >to cut them down for the A-Body. The price to >cut and respline them is $85.00/pair.

You can also use E-body. That is what they cut for me. I also had them install "Green" bearings. Those were $80 and they installed a set of long wheel studs for free!
