I am installing a nippondenso alternator on my 66 Valiant.
The original 66 VR was a mechanical type, which has been replaced with the electronic type ( not the late model oem type). This charging system regulates the current flow on the positive wire to the alternator field terminal, and the other field terminal is grounded.

The newer OEM electronic regulators, have 12 volts applied to the regulator and the alternator field terminal, then the other alt field terminal connects to the regulator and is a switched ground, by the regulator.

Any one see a problem with leaving the original 66 regulator wireing, and 66 electronic regulator, and connecting the 2nd alternator field terminal to ground? In other words the same as using a late 70's alternaor (dual field)on a early car (that had a single field).

I wouldn't consider doing this with a points type regulator, but don't see a problem with the electronic reg.

There is no problem doing this what you describe either with a points-type or with an electronic regulator. It works just fine even with the later alternators.

Thanks, I couldn't see a proplem, but wanted another opinion.

The only reason, I would not do it with a point regulator is is the poorer (is that a word?) regulation.

Poorer is a word, but the electromechanical regulators work just fine if they're selected and adjusted correctly.

It is in, and working just fine. Also wired in a field circuit relay, with a WOT cutout switch. The switch is already installed for my nitrous system.
