Hey guys I have a 1965 Dodge A-100 that had plenty of gremlins in the electrical system, so I decided to be on the safe side and get a new harness. I bought one from southernrods.com, heres the link (http://www.southernrods.com/categories/ ... -1003.html. The harness seems really solid, wires aren't thin and wimpy but the directions that came with it are pretty crappy. Here is how I have the ignition switch wired:

Wire Label-------What it's connected to
IGN SW PWR------Batt Prong on IGN switch
IGN SW IGN-------I 1 Prong on IGN switch
IGN SW ACC------Acc Prong on IGN switch
IGN SW Start-----Start Prong on IGN switch
IGN SW Coil------I 2 Prong on IGN Switch

Does that all seem right?

As far as the starter and starter relay are concerned, there are 2 wires that go to the starter/relay. One is the IGN SW START wire, and the other is labeled SOLENOID PWR. The directions say that the IGN SW START wire goes to the prong on the starter relay labeled I, and it doesn't say at all where the SOLENOID PWR wire goes. Does the SOLENOID PWR wire go to what used to be the ballast resistor (I have pertronix)? If so, does this wire and the the COIL wire get tied together, then out to the coil? Can someone shed some light on this for me so I feel less like a dope than I do now?

Oog. "Universal" wiring harnesses like this make the hair on the back of my neck stand up and do the creepy-crawly. They're made for putting together T-buckets with Chevrolet engines, and if you happen to be doing anything else, you're on your own. GM starter circuits are wired up differently than Mopar starter circuits. Same with charging circuits and a great deal of the rest of the electrical system. I'm sure you can make this work, I'm just not sure that you can do it without cutting and splicing.

I can only go by your description, so my guess is that you should follow the instructions and connect "IGN SWITCH START" to the starter relay. Where's the other end of this "SOLENOID PWR" wire? Without knowing that, I can't guess where you should connect it.

The rest of your hookups you list seem as though they are probably correct.

Thanks Dan!! The SOLENOID PWR wire goes back to the fuse box as far as I know, I'm only on lunch so I'll have to check it out when I get home later. Thanks again though for your response. I'll also see if I can't hook up the scanner and just scan the mopar page out of the instruction manual.

Well after refering to the Ford and GM pages in the instructions, as the Mopar page is severly lacking, I think I figured it out. On the Ford and GM pages, it shows the SOLENOID PWR wire being connected to a fuseable link, and then to the battery side of the starter solenoid. So the SOLENOID PWR wire is really just the main power source running to the fuse box I think. I should be able to connect the fuseable link to it and hook it up to the battery post on the starter relay, correct?

That should work OK, yes.

Been a while since this post, but my new question relates to it. I haven't been able to work on the truck for a while i was in the middle east, but recently got the motor back in it and got everything hooked up. Turned the key in it and it would fire and try to run, as soon as i stopped turning it over and would let the key go back to the on position, the engine would die. Put a test light on all the prongs and had power where i should. except i didnt have power at the coil when the key was just in the on position. The coil comes off the I2 prong on the ignition switch. We hooked up a jumper wire from the I1 prong to the positive post on the coil, and sure enough it fired up and ran (roughly and richly) but it ran. Does this mean that my ignition switch is bad? Should i just run a new wire back from the I1 post on the switch or is that too much load for that prong? I have the pertronix ignition package in, so I'm not using a ballast resistor.

Ok, I think I might have figured out the best solution with a little research. I read Dan's write up here:

http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=15779

(Really awesome by the way) And was especially interested on the ignition relay portion. It sounds to me, that if I include an ignition relay under the hood and wire it up per Dan's instructions, that would resolve my lack of "on" power to my coil. Any input? SlantSixDan, if your out there, your input would be especially helpful

Can't say for sure without knowing the specifics of the no-coil-power problem you're having, but many have found the HEI installation works best with a power relay.

Dan,
My post from last night had some info on the coil power problem. I'd be happy to give you some more info, what else would you like to know?

Just replied over there...this what you're experiencing is, to my mind, a really good reason not to be tempted by "easy" (or "painless") aftermarket generic wiring harnesses meant for Shivvy and Fraud installations, eh? :-(

I think you are going to have to go thru your wiring individually, wire by wire, and make sure that every wire goes exactly (and only) where it's supposed to go, every switch works exactly as it's supposed to work, no wires are touching (or nearly touching) each other at their connection points…I don't think there's going to be an easy fix on this one, unfortunately.

everything else on the harness seems to work flawlessly, all lights, blinkers, heater, sending units, etc work correctly with no odd behavior. on my old harness there was a wire that went from I1 back to one end of the ballast resistor, and 12 that went back to the other end. when adding the pertronix, with the flame thrower coil, you remove the ballast resistor and connect those wires. On the new harness, there is no wire from I1 going back to the engine compartment. I followed I1 to the fuse box, and it feeds the Heater/AC fuse.

well, i wired up the relay per the instructions in dan's thread and the engine runs like a top. the problem was the coil was only getting power in the start position, as soon as the key dropped down into the on position the engine would die. thanks for the input!!
