can i paint the alternator? and if so some advice on how to dis-assable it would be awesome? thanks!

You can, but it'll look bizarre and make it run hotter. The rear housing half can be removed just by undoing the three through bolts, but to remove the front housing half you have to have a pulley puller (special tool) and a press to reinstall the pulley. Better to mask off and just paint the visible part of the stator (between the two housing halves) and maybe the pulley.

thanks for the awesome info slantsixdan! i think i'll take your advice about it getting hoter and just mask the whole thing off and only paint the pully.

When I had my alternator apart to change the bearings, I painted the center section from it's previous rust.........

But that's all I'd paint.
