 Post subject: external oil pump?

Greetings,

After a close call with my dragster engine losing an oil pump, I am considering an external oil pump. Probably not all the way to a dry sump.

Anyone who's put an external oil pump on a slant care to share tips/advice?

Any brand preference? I know Moroso has an external pump for around $580. A local racer claims his Weaver was around $450.

How about the drive? My slant has a Fisher balancer on it now, will a SBC pump drive interface?

Mark,
Did you find badly worn oil pump gear teeth or something else?
How did you catch the problem before failure?

Please send us info. on what you found, use the link below to print-out the data collection survay.
We continue to work on solutions for this problem and we are making good progress because of all the data we have been sent.
Bernie has contacted some outside engineers who have offered some help so stay tuned for an up-date.

Hi Doc,

Badly worn pump gear...I noticed the oil pressure guage at '0' in the lights and immediately clicked it off. This engine probably had less than 50 runs. First three rod bearings badly hurt, main bearings pretty much ok, crank is fine.

I have your survey and I've got the engine apart but I have not filled the survey out and sent in the gear. I will try to get the gear off and measure the pump this weekend as the weather here in Iowa is warming a bit (was single digits/teens for the last while).

Since so many people have had this failure, I am a little leery of just putting another pump on. This dragster is a FED, I really don't want a facefull of oil/rods/fire if it happens again with more disastrous results.

I don't like the external pump prices, but I think it can be viewed as a long term investment and potentially be used on a variety of engines. I've got a lathe and a Bridgeport and can make the bracketry required so that is not much of an issue.

Thanks for your help so far on mine and others questions, I'm sure you've helped many more people than those that post here.

I know Ron Hamby solved his problems with a really sweet little external pump. He hangs around here, hopefully he'll chime in. Dennis

There are a couple of links in an old post. (see below)
Also some discussion on external oil pumps when I searched for "dry sump oil"
Looks like it is time to make some calls. Keep us posted on what you find and snap some PICs of your new set-up.

Yes I went with an external pump last year. So far so good. Got mine from Stef's. Works real good. It maintains 65 to 100 psi. If anyone wants their number just let me know.

Hi Mark

I bought a used Weaver 3 stage pump 5 years ago and it stills works great. I found this pump at a swap meet along with the drive and oil tank. All this stuff was for a small block Chev. I had to install a weaker spring for the oil pressure regulator valve and now it pretty much stays at 50 lb all the time. I redrilled the Chev drive pulley that bolts to the damper and made the bracket to hold the pump. The biggest expence I had was all those fancy hoses. You can also use a full length windage srceen with the externel pump. The last good thing is that I now run 6" of crankcase vacume. I'll do anything for 1 more horse power.
