Post subject: | whats "stater" in a alt reference? |
Was looking at some one wire alts, and one had 3 posts.....one said batt, one was"dummy", and the other was stater.I had no idea what this was refering too......maybe a ignition lead? voltage reg? Besides.......who ever head of a 1 wire w/ 3 wires??Thanks in advance for the help. Andrew/Kidd |

The stator is the fixed winding attached to the alternator case. Most alternators have a rotating field which uses a small current relative to the output. With a fixed field the brushes would have to carry the relatively large output of the armature. I'm not a big fan of 1-wire alternators. I prefer an alternator with two wires so that the regulator senses the voltage on a wire separate from the alternator's output wire. This allows the voltage regulator to raise the alternator output to compensate for voltage drop between the alternator's output and the load. |
