Let me start by saying thanks to Doug Dutra for getting back to me so soon. I last wrote around Christmas about a whistling sound and a rough idle. I started looking around under the hood of my '64 Dart only to discover that the intake and exhaust manifolds appeared to be leaking. This is the second time that this has happened on this car. The place that rebuilt my engine said that intake and exhaust manifold warpage on this engine was common and fixed it the first time by replacing the intake and exhaust manifold with another set. I've had 3 slant six powered cars before and never had this problem. The rebuilders refuse to do any more work on the engine. Would it help to switch to separate exhaust (headers, duals) and intake rather than having the intake and exhaust bolted togethor? Is there another gasket and or sealant that I can use? The other problem I'm having is coolant leaking out of one of the bolt holes that holds the water inlet on to the head. I can see the hole to the side of the bolt head it looks to be much larger than the diameter of the threaded portion of the bolt. Do I have a part missing? Again, thanks in advance for any help in solving these problems.

From what you are discribing it dosen't seem to be a huge problem, I would just try wrapping the bolt threads with some teflon tape and see if that works. I had coolant leaking from the studs that hold the intake'exhaust manifolds on and that fixed it, I haven't had a problem with it in the 2 years since.

The correct manifold installation procedure is as follows: Install a NEW gasket between the two manifolds. Then install the three long bolts between the two manifolds but DON'T tighten them yet. Next, install the manifolds on the engine using a NEW gasket. Install the triangular washers and nuts on the upper studs and on the four lower studs opposite number 2 and 5 cylinders. These washers must be installed with the cup side against the manifold. Then install the steel conical washers on the center upper stud and on the two center lower studs with the cup side facing the manifold. Install the brass washers on each end stud with the flat side facing the manifold. Install the nuts with the flat side away from the washer and tighten the nuts to 10 ft/lbs MAX. Then tighten the three bolts between the two manifolds to 15 ft/lbs. Also, make sure that the bracket and clamp from the engine block to the exhaust pipe, right under where the exhaust pipe attaches to the manifold, are in place. Doing all of this is important if you are going to prevent exhaust manifold warpage, cracks and leaks. Use plumbers joint seal compound or Teflon tape on the manifold studs to prevent coolant leaks.
