 Post subject: update on 63 valiant

Ok, i read everyone's responses to my question. Well, i put in a reman distributor that had little run time on 71 valiant, a new ballast resistor. I also tried that hot lead from the battery to the coil.The points are set right. Still acts the same way. While my friend was cranking it over, i saw that the coil was arching really bad on the terminals. I swapped coil wires and it stopped. But it was dark, and i saw that it was arching all along the wire. What is the cause of this? I am stumped. This is really frustrating. I am really looking at the possibility i may have jumped the timing chain. Any input on what else it could be? Doc? I am not ready to give up on this car!

Do you have spark at the end of a spark plug wire?
(Pull a wire, plug-in an extra spark plug, ground it by holding it onto the cast iron head, crank the engine and you should see a nice white / blue spark, - spark, - spark as you crank)

Have you run a compression check, checked the valves? does the engine crank-over evenly? ("errr-da-da-da-da-da-da . . .) or does it "skip through" cylinders or sounds like it is cranking with the plugs out?

Pull the valve cover off and check the cam position at TDCE, it is easy to see if a SL6 has jumped a tooth by doing this.(more like a few teeth if it won't run)(search for "degree cam")

All you need is Gas, (you have good gas right?) Spark at the plug, at the correct moment) and Compression. Confirm these things and it has to run. (call me before "giving-up", I have never met a SL6 that "turned-over", that I could not get to run)

Hey just some encouragement, Keep working!
The first car I really wanted to buy, but could never close the deal, was a '63 White 2 Dr, blue interior push button Valiant.
I'm like Doug, it's got to RUN!
Hook up a gas can with a new hose to your fuel pump. Make sure you don't have a intake leak, cap everything you don't have to have.
I betting you will get this car!

Ok, The slant turns and right when it sounds like it's about to fire up, it just bogs the starter ( it's a MP high torque mini starter), I haven't run a compression check yet, i don't have a compression tester. the motor has good gas, I will do everything you said to do on it doc and let ya know what the results are.

Sounds more and more like a timing problem.

You said there was high-voltage arcing in the dark...right? A neighbor once tried to save money on plug wires by spraying the old ones with varnish hoping to extend their life. He had the same sparking, and his truck wouldn't run because the varnish sent the spark directly to ground. Did you current owner do something like this?

I would also re-check your plug wiring to make sure the cap wires are not off one position.
