Can removal of the spring & piston be performed with the oil filter in place without having an oil drain-down mess? Or, is this best performed with the oil filter removed? |

I'd do it with the oil filter removed to avoid just such a mess. |

Personal preference here, we all do it differently. I've done it a great many times with the oil filter attached. Even if you remove the oil filter, you still get a bit of a mess when the filter comes off the pump. If you leave the filter in place, it will only drain down through the relief area, where it's centralized, and you can simply put a pan under it. Question: Why are you taking it apart? Is your oil pressure low? ~THOR~ |

He's taking it apart because it is routine maintenance usually neglected decades past its due-date. |

At what mileage does this have to be done? Every 20,000? |

THOR, I picked this car up this past March, and don't know the history. The valve cover had been recently decrudded before I got the car. The top of the head was clean no sludge, and the oil is showing a darkening now that I driven 1500 miles or so this summer. Even though the oil pressure light only comes on when cranking the engine, and no excess clatter exhibited at idle after a good warm up. I figured what the heck, I'll check it out, and get the oil changed. |

Oh, y'know, every thirty years or so, whether it needs it or not Seriously, every couple years ought to be plenty. |

By the way the FM recommended #400 wet/dry paper to clean the barnacles off the piston if needed, and be very careful not to round off any of the sharp edges in the process. If the edges were rounded, toss it out and buy a new piston. |

Let us know how yours looks when you take it apart. If it smooth or if it is scratched up or growing barnacles..... |

What happens to the oil pressure relief valve so that you have to take it apart? |

As requested... The device was scratch free, and spotless. Two minutes to remove the spring and entrails, 30 minutes to get the jack, wrench, camera, carb cleaner, and the right glasses... |
