 Post subject: Turbo selection Help!
PostPosted: Wed Jan 23, 2002 1:50 pm
I am trying to put together a turbo set-up for my slant 225. Here is the options I have. A turbo from a 2.3 T couger(84) or a Mitsubishi Eclipse 2.0 turbo. Which one would be best to use for a good street set-up? I plan on about 8 pounds of boost with a intercooler to avoid melting anything. OR, should I just keep searching for a t4 off a grand national? These above mentioned turbos I already have so that makes them more apealing. Please advise! I have tried getting a response from some of the discussion groups with no replies. Andrew where are ya? I need help!

Hello
What numbers are on the turbo off the thunderbird? This turbo should be the better of the 2. Better yet would be a turbo from the 87 to 89 thunderbird but for street use and if you are not tring to break into the 10s, the turbo from the 84 will be fine and would most likly get you into the 13s with the right engine mods. The 84 turbos are a little smaller then the 87-89 turbo. As for the Eclipse turbos they run out of steam to fast. I still would like to see the numbers from the turbo.

The numbers to look for are cast right into the "snail" housings and indicate the ratio between the turbin and compressor.
Andy, what ratio are you currently using?

.63 on the intake side and I think it is .60 or .62 on the exhaust side(one or the other)

I will look this weekend when I get home to find the numbers. But it is your general opinion that this turbo would be ok? As far as hooking it up, I was looking at the Dutra duals web page, and his exhaust that went into a flowmaster y pipe gave me a idea. Build somthing similar, but coming forward and hanging the turbo where the battery box was. I just dont know what type of tubing I could hook to the duals and support the weight of the turbo. You think stainless exhaust tube would cut it hanging on exhaust flanges? I was also wondering if I needed to support its weight any other way. Thanks, Ray

This turbo should be fine for what you want. As for getting from the manifold to the turbo your idea with the y pipe sounds good, I would try to support it with something from the engine. One other thing that helps everything from shaking so much is to tie the engine to the frame so you save motor mounts and the turbo being so far out will not move a lot.
