Post subject:  How would one determine if head has been milled or not

Is there an easy way to determine if the head or block has previously been milled. I may have the head modified this winter with a bit of porting & decking, and over sized valves.

The block is easy - by the alternator, on the block, there's a pad of material sticking out that has block size and various symbols to indicate journal under size, etc. If those stamps are gone, block has been milled before.

With a head you pretty much have to CC the chambers to get a starting point. Casting/machining of factory heads was not that exact to have a decent measurment to go by.

While not totally reliable, I have found all the stock heads, I have, will measure 3.595 to 3.606 inches, from the head/deck surface to the valve cover mounting surface. This will at least tell you if the head has been cut a lot or not. The best way is to cc the combustion chamber, but this can give you a ball park indication.
