 Post subject: Decking and Pumping

OK guys, I'll admit it. Before my 16 yr old dragged home his 60 Pioneer w/ a 225 SL6, I bled Chevy orange. When I started this project, I read everything I could get my hands on regarding the SL6. I'll have to admit it's a pretty neat engine and it is growing on me.

Consistantly, I've read "don't deck the block" and "if you're using and electric fuel pump, always use it in series with a mechanical pump".

I understand that I don't want to whomp 0.100" off the deck to pump up the compression ratio. But is there any reason not to shave off 0.005-0.010" to clean up, and square the deck surface?

And regarding the fuel pump. I've got a nice little block-off plate and a Carter electric pump (5 psi, 72 gph). Running a fuel pump off the cam is parasitic loss to the engine. I'm after every hp I can get my hands on. Am I dancing on the brink of Hades here? If it's enough fuel pump to make a 350 SB Chevy go, it there any reason to fear problems with the SL6?

No problems that I know of, infact, I feel that squaring-up the block deck and getting that surface flat and clean is a "must do" when rebuilding a SL6.

As for the electric fuel pump, most run the electric in series with the mechanical pump as "insurance". They have the electric wired to a switch and turn it on only when fuel demand is high. You can just run the electric pump alone but if it fails for any reason, you will be walking.

I agree with you. When building an engine I have always taken a light cut on the deck just square things up. Just didn't make sense not to deck the block.

As for the fuel pump, my boy has good shoes and a cell phone! I am interlocking the fuel pump with an oil pressure switch.
