Hi guys,

My first attempt at posting a picture, hope it works. This is my Slant Six car, a 1960 Plymouth Four Door sedan. She's a right hand drive built in Canada for use in Jamaica, and has three speed auto with that great push button selector. She's my very first car (a bit different, especially here in England), had her about a year now. Hope you all like her!

The 1960 Plymouth Savoy/Belvedere was one of the coolest slant six cars ever built. Nice car, and post more pics!

Unfortunately, she doesn't look quite so clean anymore. British weather has been getting to her since her last restoration in 1993 and it's about time for me to get the welder out. She needs the rain gutters rebuilt, the rear window lip welded up and a respray. I found four good doors in Colorado that are now waiting to be sent over here in a friend's container. He offered the space for free, which is fantastic, I just could not afford to get them shipped and the doors are pretty rotten.
I'm a student so I am doing all the work myself. Have got some structural repairs under my belt so now need to have a stab at the stuff that has to look good as well as be functional.

All great fun though! I think it's really satisfying to be able to put work into the car to keep her alive, instead of just buying somthing and letting somone else take care of it.
Will post more pictures as desired :P

Yup, you sent me to Bob looking for oil :P . Bob can't get 10w-30 easily either, but I found a guy on eBay who sold it at a fair price. Recently, the price has rocketted unfortunately. Off on the search again . . .
Bob has had a fair few cars at one point or another. A few days after I got in contact he found a 1960 Fury four door, can't remember if it was a hard top or a sedan. Was pretty close in colour and rust too!
She's off the road for winter now (the salters are very vicious over here), my insurance will run out and if she isn't insured, I won't be tempted to drive, and therefore won't be concerned about not having her at hand, so will get on with the restoration. Well that's the theory . . .

Wow! Wonder what that air cleaner is from (it's not from a slant-6).

Yeah, we've had Smarts in Canada since 2004 or so, and they just got them in the States.

(Do I spot the electric eye for an automagic headlamp dipper on your dash?)

Interesting. Those aren't stock 1960 slant intake and exhaust manifolds either. I also spy the precursor to the PCV--the "road draft" tube.

Someone has done some upgrades. I see a dual chamber master cylinder (front discs maybe?) and I would hazard a guess that that is a two barrel intake.

You should take pity on yourself and install a remote oil filter, a driver's side alternator mount, and electronic ignition.

Looks exactly like my '60 exhaust & intake-aluminum 1bbl.
Don't know about the air cleaner though.

Someone swapped on later American manifolds (and some components from a '66-'67 Australian Valiant); it's still a 1bbl intake.

Interesting point about the oil filter — the RHD A-bodies had remote oil filters from the factory, and I had thought the same was true on the bigger cars, but perhaps there was enough room for the steering box + brake cylinder + pump-mounted oil filter on the bigger cars, or else the original remote oil filter setup was replaced with American components sometime in the last 49 years.

Interestingly, last night, Halloween, there was a Stephen King movie on USA Network titled " The Bullet". One of the cars that is often seen in the movie is a red 60' Plymouth two door. Strange to see two of these wonderful cars in a twenty four hour period...

Hey Guys,

Dan - Yup, that's the auto headlight dimmer. Was 'Automagic' the designated Chrysler name? Alas, it doesn't work, funny though, that draws more questions than anything else on the car. That along with "how many gallons to the mile does that thing do?", and "Is that a C*dillac?".
I do have a slant air cleaner, but that was obtained long after the car was. Needs the wee tube sticking out the side though. Have no idea what the current cleaner is, but has a heavily bodged carb mount to get it to fit.

Reed - Yep, the road draft tube is still there. I may well swap out the tube for a PCV, when I have the funds I plan to get a newer carb from Dan.
Unfortunately, I do not have disks up front. The dual master has some interesting proportional valves put in the brake lines, not exactly stock. The car stops very well with her drums however, and has done since '93, I have had no reason to change yet (disks would be nice, but not in my budget).
As far as the remote oil filter, I have never had a problem getting to the stock position, there's sooooo much room under that hood, even with the steering column etc in the way.
Electronic ignition is on the way, once I get my MP dizzy recurved into somthing a bit more roadable.

wjajr - Yup, "Riding the Bullet" is a '60 two door coupe, red and white, a tip of the hat to "Christine", Steven's slightly more famous finned Plymouth. I believe it's fitted with the Sonoramic Commando V8, which presumably leaves less space under the hood to work compared with the slant.

No...that's just a goofy variant of the boring ol' normal word "automatic". I forget what Chrysler called it, exactly, think it was just known as "Automatic Beam Selector". GM called theirs "Autronic Eye". Very strange bit of kit to find on a low-line Plymouth; they were generally only found on top-of-the-range Imperials and suchlike. Don't worry about its not working; they never worked properly even before they broke, which they tended to do quickly. There was one automagic beam selector devised by an extremely talented and celebrated American inventor in the 1960s. It overcame all the operational problems of other autodippers (the biggest of which was dipping in response to the car's own headlight beam reflected off road signs), though it would likely have had the same reliability/durability issues as other electronics of the day, due to the rather primitive state of the art in components. It was never commercialised as none of the automakers wanted to pay for it. If they could've got away with stealing it, they would've; just ask the guy who invented the interval wiper control!

The autodipper problem has only just recently been satisfactorily cracked, using camera-based detection technology. When I was in France last month for the VISION automotive lighting and driver assistance congress, there was a series of nighttime demonstration drives in cars fitted with prototypes of tomorrow's lighting and driver-assistance systems. One of the systems demonstrated was a really good autodipper that behaved flawlessly even under conditions that would've brought earlier systems to their figurative knees.

Those tended to break off. Have an exhaust shop select a length of correct-diameter pipe about 8" long, trumpet-flare one end, and neatly weld or braze the other end to the housing.
