I am geting everything together to do a super six swap into my 80 Volare. With the intake I got a Holley 2280 that is in rebuildable condition I am looking for a rebuild kit but first want to make sure that THAT THE CARB IS ACTUALLY A /6 CARB.

The body of the carb has the following numbers:

Also all of my experiences with holleys have been negative (mostly in trying to tune 4 bbl setups). Should I be looking for a Carter BBD or is the Holley a decent carb. I searched the forums and it seems that bothe the Holley and Carter have berformed well. Since I have the Holley id like to stick with it and give the brand another chance.

You can call Vatozone and they should be able to tell you what that carb came off of.

IMO I have run 2 2280's on my 198. They were both 318 carbs. Both ran better than any BBD that I dropped on there. Got the same MPG etc.

One was ID'd as a 84 truck carb. They are harder to assemble and disassemble than a BBD. The accelerator pump linkage is tough to get right.

Never played with the jetting. I think they use regular Holley 4bbl jets.

I have found the Carter BBD rebuild kits but so far nothing on the Holley, I will keep looking.
The carb does not look too bad, but it has bee nsittin fro a while and there is some oxidation in and around so it will need a good cleaning.

Call a store a knowledgeable parts guy can tell you what you have. It's a Holley, lots of those little boogers out there! They have the kits.

BBDs make a bit more power, but 2280s can give better gasmileage.

I, too, have struggled with Holley four barrels, but I have never had a problem with a 2280.

The easiest way to tell if it is a slant six specific carburetor is to look at the choke linkage. Read this article It tells you how to identify a slant six carb from a v-8 carb.

It can be tricky to find a rebuild kit. I once went to a Napa and asked for a rebuild kit or a Holey 2280 and the parts guy wouldn't believe me that such a carburetor existed. I almost asked him to step outside and tell me what was sitting on my motor then, but I didn't. Try asking for a carb rebuild kit for a 84 Dodge van with a 318 and a non-feedback two barrel Holley carb.

R9947 is a 2280 originally intended for 1980 Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth passenger cars with 318 engine and Federal (49-state) emissions. Rebuild kit is a Walker 15702B. Float is a Walker 100-88. Choke pull-off is a Walker 101-926.

Both my 78 Fury (with its blasted Lean Burn) and my 83 D 250 have 2280s on them; both 318s with A/T. though I have the FSMs on them both and they list either a BBD or a 2280 as possible from-the-factory possibilites in each year and have set up specs for both.

Last I heard, and I could definitely be wrong on this, Holley doesn't make the jets for those anymore, or something to that effect. They are alot smaller than the 1bbl, 4bbl, or even other 2bbl models. Not sure why this is. I tried calling around for jets for a 2280 to jet it down a bit to work better with the slant, and everyone told me that they hadn't seen jets for those in a long time.

I'm not talking about AutoScones, CSK, or Knechts, I mean actual carb rebuild shops that are Holley carb suppliers.

So, I dunno. Nice thing about the BBD is that they have metering rods that are basically adjustable, so you can kinda set them where the car runs the best.

Jets are still readily available. The 2280 doesn't take the large jets like a 1920 or 1945, but rather the smaller jets. These are available in numerous orifice sizes from Walker; they're the "120-6" jet family as listed in Walker's Holley Metering & Jets catalogue (PDF). Probably also worth getting their Holley 2bbl master parts catalogue.

In my experience with slants [limited], I have found slant specific 2 bbl. carburetors, Holley or Carter, have a curved vacuum tube for PCV hook up. On the 318 carburetors I have seen the tube is shorter and straight.

I dont want to hijack my own thread but at Carlisile this year I picked up a NOS Holley 2245 It is OEM on a 360. Looks like it flows about 320 CFM and I could make it work with an adapter. Has anyone tried one of these on a slant? I will probably just stick with the factory carb but this might be a good experiment once i get it all together.
