If you run a 3ohm coil , can you remove/bypass the ballast resistor?
i seen it in some old posts and am wondering if its true and if so which coil (mopar EI installed on car ) is best?

The stock coil is around 1.5 ohms and the primary impedence around 2.4 mH. The stock point-type ballast is designed to get hot and increase resistance; roughly R= (0.5 + 0.633*A) ohms where A is the current in amps, while the stock electronic ignition ballast is about a constant 1 ohm.

Hence, I'd suggest you bypass the resistor or you'd decrease your available spark energy (at least at low RPM) by a factor of ~40-50% (assuming the coil impedence is the same).

anyone run a pertronix flame thrower 3 ohm coil, bypassing the factory ballast resistor?

Yep, I am! I did it quite a few months ago, and I bypassed the ballast. I have had no problems so far, and I love it. I am also running the stock ECU, but I want to get ahold of one of those orange ones, this one looks origional!

Yep, no ballast and a Pertronix I for the points.

Runs good, and no problems starting.

Anyone ever try the square 3 ohm HV Pertronix coil that mounts on the inner fender with out the ballast resistor? If so, how well does it work?

Thanks!
