i was driving down the road yesterday and my car made this loud backfire [right now i have no muffler and it was freezing outside] and my car jerked forward and shut off so i pulled onto a off ramp and checked my oil and for holes in the block and any leaking and couldn't find anything out of the ordinary. so i started it back up it started just fine and i drove about 10 feet and the car jerked forward again and then smoke started coming up from the hood [not the front of the hood the sides] and a cop pushed me to a parking lot and i tried starting it again and it made no sound at all when i turned the key not even the starter.

Sounds electrical. Could you be more specific as to where the smoke came from (fire wall, wires along engine, near battery)? What year is your car?

I've got a 1970 Plymouth valiant and the smoke looked to be coming from the fire wall and the smoke smelled rubbery

Replace the fusible link and find out why it shorted.

Fix the overload or short and then replace the fusible link.

Until you track down the cause of theblown fusible link, you may want to install a temporary circuit breaker instead of another fusible link.
