Hey Dan,

Are you familiar with the power steering gear on a '61 Valiant.
I believe it's a rare combination.

The one I have has an amazing amount of free-play. Do you have info on how to repair / replace this? Is it so rare or desirable that it would be wrong to consider replacing with a newer K-member?

Thx in advance, Ray

It is most likely a rare option-- although all 1961 valiant items are rare today. Not sure where ssDan is to give you facts/figures.-- It has been discussed swapping newer 62-66 k members for the odd 60-61 style-- no one has done it (that I recall)
you might see if you can find a manual gear/ column & swap them out --. Good luck-- Lawrence

Is there an advantage to going manual aside from parts availbility?

Does anyone know if the newer k-members will bolt onto the 61 Val?

Thx, Ray

I put a 65 kmem in my 61. I also changed the a arms, lower control arms, ball joints, strut rods and the steering gear. I was after disc brakes.
So my 61 basically now has a 65 suspension with a 70 disc setup. The steering gear mounts on the kmem in 62-66, not to the left frame like 61. I am not sure if the 61 lower control arms will work with the 62-66 kmem. And if you change the lower control arms, the strut rods change due to mounting differences.
Another disclaimer - I have not had my 61 out on the road since the swap
- they may be problems I have not encountered yet - but it all appears okay. I do have two well used manual steering boxes from 61 valiants hat I no longer need.

That opens up many new options. Please keep me posted. Ray

have you made any decisions on the p/s ? I believe the manual steering has a 20:1 ratio-- which seems to be a good choice for these cars. You would need a manual column thogh, L
