Is there any difference between cork and rubber gaskets? I put a cork gasket on a car [other than my Valiant] when doing a transmission service and it's leaked ever since. I've been told that it was because of the cork gasket or lack of spooge. I'm going to do a tranny service on the Valiant before spring arrives and only want to do it once.
Ideas please???
Thanks.
Joe

copied and pasted from SSDan in another post. I've used one of the rigid gaskets from the dealer. Works great

"•A 1964-up transmission pan or a brand-new pan. Nice new pans with unwarped rails can be had from the dealer under p/n 52118 779AB, and they even include a spiffy magnet to catch metallic shavings. Whether you go that route or install a used '64-up pan, save yourself a bunch of current and future hassle: Discard the floppy cork or rubber pan gasket that comes with the filter kit. Instead, from the Chrysler dealer get the really nice double-seal, reusable rigid pan gasket P/N 4295 875AC. "

Edit: assuming you have a 904 trans

Good advice. Also make sure if you are reusing the pan that the area around the bolt holes isn't deformed and compressing the gasket just around the bolts. I usually turn the pan flange upright on a block of wood and put the ball of a ball-peen hammer in each bolt hole and know the dents back down with another hammer.

Excellent information about the rigid pan gasket.
Thank you.
