just found an old 1970's plymouth slant six with a cast iron case 4 speed..is this overdrive ? in a local junk yard missing shifter knob/it is a 4 speed but can not tell if it's overdrive from looking @ it..any thoughts on how to figure it out..were build a 1968 440 dart and want to start getting parts to build it's twin using a super six /4 speed...fun/games

On an overdrive transmission the front or 3-4 shifter arm on the transmission points down, on a regular 4 speed both arms point up.

No, the first ones in the 1975 model year have a cast iron case (I have one and I much prefer lifting the aluminum cased model...)
If the tranny is 'free' from the bellhousing you can measure the bearing retainer and see what size it is, 5.125" makes more possibly an OD tranny... anything else and it's a regular A-833...

yea..the car looks like a 1975...plymouth if I remember, bench seat, with a dog leg shifter..4 door too ! someone has already taken out the peddel set up and steering column...anyone ever put one of these slamt six overdrives on a big block for better gas mileage? I have a nice slant six 1985 dodge/4 speed overdrive ram pickup that I tow with and was day dreaming about this conversion, probally never happen but it is good to know options.The rig runs perfect and I learned years ago don't mess with a good running vehicle.thanks !

Gas mileage? Big Block? Do those even coincide?

Yes, quite a few people have put them behind a big block. Many try to find the cast iron cased ones because of the mechanics of the OD tranny. In 3rd the input shaft it tied right into the output shaft so if you have a massive surge in power the locked assembly will hold... in OD though, the power it carried from the input shaft to the countershaft at the bottom then back to the mainshaft... which puts all the load on the countershaft and gears when at highway speeds and trying to pass aggressively. Many aluminum cases have had egged countershaft holes and cracked cases because someone thought they could take a 600 hp daily driven 440...

The shift handle you see is stock for all A/F bodies.
