I will be making the switch to LBP wheels and am looking at some 15x7 chrome rally wheels with 4 1/4" of backspacing. According to the tire size calculator I use, 225-50-15 are very close to the same diameter as the original 13" tires. the 225-60-15 are a little larger. I know this has been discussed at length regarding later models such as the Duster and Swinger, but mines is an early a-body, a 62 Valiant "Toad." What kind of fitment issues can I expect with either of these sizes in this application?

That is a very good plan for that car. Many people have run those sizes on those cars. 225/50-15s will give a bit crisper handling than the 60s, but not a huge difference. 60s will ride a bit smoother. It's possible the 60s may be a bit of a squeeze on the front edge of the front fender lip, but probably OK or you could grind a bit off.

I loved my 225/50-15s on my '64 Dart. Not sure I really improved the handling much by going to 245/45-16s...

One thing I like about the road toads is the radiused rear wheel openings. That's a styling detail I'd like to adapt to my '64. The '64 wagons had them, why not the sedans? :D
I have 205/60R15's with 15X7 wheels with +13mm offset, or 4 1/2" backspace. They're very close to the height of the 185-80R13's on the car when I got it. It's a litle close between the rear tires and the fender liners, but OK:

Another centimer should still clear, depending on exact profile. A radiused opening would help with wider tires.
