I have a fog type light mounted in the back of my cargo van so I can see the parts at night. The bulb is blown. The numbers on the bulb are 12V21W. A 1156 bulb seems to fit and light up. Also a 1157 seems to also do the same. What is the difference and which one should I use?

An 1156 is 1 filament, the 1157 2 filaments.

Look into the socket and see if there are 1 or 2 contacts for the bulb (most likely 1), then pick matching bulb.
