Post subject: trailer hitch for Dart
PostPosted: Thu Apr 04, 2002 10:23 am
Doe anyone have a trailer hitch on their DART? I would likw to know how and where it is attached. I have a 1969 Dart and would like to pull a small fishin boat but can not find anything locally that will fit. All I find are reciever hitches for pickups and SUV's.

I saw one a few months ago on e-bay. It attached with a bracket that went around the license plate and bolted to the spare tire bump. I doesn't sound like any more than a class I hitch. It was also for a 65 a-body. Does anybody remember those u-haul bumper mounted hitches? When I was a kid (back in the 60's) I remember we rented a trailer and used a bolt on hitch. It kind of clamped onto the bumper. Not something you'd want to do with a modern bumper. Let me know what you find out. I want to do the same thing on my 65

Years ago I had a '66 Dart with a bumper hitch. It had a L shaped bracket that bolted onto the bumper behind the license plate. There was a straight piece of metal that bolted onto the bottom of the L bracket. One side went under the spare tire well and was held there with 2 bolts the other when out the rear and had the hole for the ball. Not Class 3 stuff, but it would have been OK for small trailers.

I would try a shop that specializes in hitches and trailers. They should be able to make you a hitch that fits the car.

Does it mount to the frame or the bumper?

: Mine mounts to the bumper, behind the liscence plate.4 bolts through the face of the bumper and 2 bolts through the lower bumper flange. If your car has hydraulic bumper impct shocks, you will have to make brackets to rigidly mount the bumper to the rear crossmember. These are to prevent the bumper from moving in and out when braking or accelerating.I have this setup on my Aspen wagon, and recently pulled a 1700 pound load with no problems.Of course, your mileage may vary, and past performance is not an indicator of future results.Ya pays yer money,ya takes yer chances!!!
