I have an old MSD 5 C ign box that decided to quit on me today. They no longer make these. Does MSD (or anyone else) repair these? Is it reasonable as to even be worth-it? I did get the box for free from a buddy that knows I'm a Mopar fan. After ~5200 miles on my truck it decided it didnt wanna work no more;
it was used when I got it, it was a freebie so it does not "owe" me a thing if it turns out not to be worth it.

Call them up and ask.

Some companies have a cheap refurbished program, you send them a broken box, and they send you back a refurbished one cheap.

(Got a refurbished dremel for $20 doing this)........

I've sent an MSD box to MSD for repair. It's been probably 13 years since I did so, but they fixed the box right up, updated a component or two and sent it back.

I have an old MSD-7, that retired. Called MSD several years ago, to see about getting it repaired, and was told they didn't have parts to repair it.

Charlie,

Send it to me! I work on electronics and would like to give it a try.

When one of my MSD5 boxes got erratic only when cold just out of warranty, I phoned MSD and was quoted a fixed price to fix it that was about the cost of buying a new MSD5, so it's not worth paying them to fix a MSD5 - it is not nearly as good a system as the MSD6. You can easily open up and follow the traces on the MSD and probably any good electronics guy with a scope could fix it.

I tested my working MSD5 on a scope and found that by ~1500 rpm it was down to 1 spark/trigger, about 3 sparks/trigger at idle. It was a huge improvement over points in my AMC, but wasn't a noticable improvement over factory electronic in my Ford.

I never did get to see this particular box on a scope, but the other MSD 5 I used to have I did and it seems it took greater RPMS than you say for it to be down to a single apark. IIRC at 1500 it was down to like 3 sparks per ignition cycle. Have not had a chance to call MSD (thanks for the reference, BTW) due to constant running back n forth to the hospital to visit my Mom ; but if it winds up costing nearly what a new box goes for yeah It would then be tossd into File 13. As I had said I got this one for free and so owes me --$0.00. if that turns out to be the case.

I do remember freaking out a couple guys when I had that other MSD 5, years ago and I worked at a place where I had ignition scope access.
