Where is the oil going
Valve seals 50%  50%  [ 7 ]
gapless ring are known to use oil 29%  29%  [ 4 ]
builder reinstalled oil control ring incorrectly 7%  7%  [ 1 ]

It pains me to ask such a question but it is what it is.
A little background:
When the engine was first built it didn't burn a drop of oil. It has Total Seal gapless rings and bronze valve guides with Viton valve seals. Engine at this point had maybe 2500-3000 miles on it and didn't use oil.
Decided to lower the compression:
Pulled the piston and milled some off the top (where nitrous spec'd) and opened up the chambers some to bring CR down to 9.25 from 10.25. Reused the Viton valve seals and reinstalled the same rings (gapless) in same holes. Engine now uses about a quart every 700 to 1000 miles.
Just changed cam to a smaller one and at that time changed out the valve seals from the Viton to the rubber/teflon ones. Engine seems to still smoke the same blue/white as before. Engine uses NO coolant.
When starting there is always a little cloud and I am OK with that, although it more cloud that it should be. When driving off from any stop light or stop sign there is enough of a cloud that the drivers behind me seem to hesitate before leaving also. I've also tried to leave the line very softly as to minimize the smoke, but this seems to have very little effect. At idle there are little puffs of blue/white smoke. I am using Rotella 15-40

Actually you could go with "All of the above".

Personally I'd never run gapless rings in a street motor. Ring life is none too good in a race motor, let alone in a street motor with thin cylinder walls.

Another personal belief is that Viton seals have no place on the street. I put heads together with an umbrella seal on the intake and nothing on the exhaust. I'd rather have good guides and deal with a little oil use than try and really control oil usage and end up with wiped out guides.

That's just me though. :lol:

I'll bet the problem lies in the fact you reused the rings.

PCV= still rattles

I don't see how its possible for valve guide to wear out in 6000 miles. The guides were new bronze inserts.

The rings where over $200 for the set with only 3000 miles on them tops. I don't see the problem with reusing them in the same hole. If I where to use new rings, wouldn't I have needed to rehone the cylinders to get them to break in.

Re-using rings is always a crap shoot. My concern would be using gapless to start with.

6000 miles may not seem like much, but if you have sealed all the oil out of them and run unleaded fuel that could easily kill them.

700-1000 miles a quart is really not excessive for the overbore you have.

Are you sure it's not pig rich at idle?

You can wear out guides in 500 miles if they dont oil......

If your valve train geometry is off you will wear out guides faster.

The symptoms as described remind me very much of what happened when I used Total Seal rings, and this topic reminds me very much of having said so several times when Brennan was asking about rings a long time ago.

But I could be misremembering or something. :roll:

I have exactly the same problem. Guides and seals replaced when I re-worked the valves. Still, puff of smoke on launch or fire up.

Total seal rings. Never again. When I pull the motor down next winter I'm going to install iron rings and be done with it.

One builder suggested the long stroke was allowing the rings to unload.
Maybe. Oil control has been an issue with these rings for many people.
