hey guys, i had this problem before. no stop lights. i heard someone slam on brakes, and saw smoke. so i asked someone if my stop lights were working, and they said no. all fuses are good, changed the stop light switch, traced the wires to the fuse box, and to the signal flasher, all in order. any ideas?

Bad bulbs, faulty turn signal switch (remember the stop light power goes thru the turn signal switch), faulty wiring between stop light switch and turn signal switch or between turn signal switch and stop lights, faulty ground.

Ive been having this problem to... I just recently figured it out. What kind of car do you have? On my car (65 Valiant) all the brake lights, turn signals, basically all the lights in the back of the car have wires going through the steering column up to the blinker switch and then back down to the lights. In that switch there are metal contacts and on my car some of those contacts went bad. This switch is made of plastic and Ive heard of it go bad after age so it is a possibility that's the case as it was for me, the only bad thing about seeing if these contacts are bad is you cant open the switch without "monkeying" with it to get it open.

Then recently my left tail light went out with no bad wires or nothing and after spending a day trying to figure it out I found a wiring connector not fully plugged into the female, so a little squeze and it was working. These kinda things make me feel so silly!

Hope this helps...
