| Post subject: | Rearend Gears and Main Bearings Replaced |
I just had a guy here take out my 4:10 gears and replace with 3:55 ring and pinion, new internals and new main bearings. I now have a whining at very slow speed and at high speed. Any ideas whether bearings are bad or work was bad? |

Were the axle bearings replaced at the same time? If I were you, I'd contact the mechanic that did the work, before too much time elapses. Just to let him know about the noise. |

Charlie down in Florida says it sounds as if the gear mesh was not done properly and that a specialty tool is required. Going to try to find a rearend specialty shop. Thanks for any input. |

Some aftermarket gears are just inherently noisy, even when correctly installed. There are warnings about them on many of the sites that sell gears. OEM gears seem to be the quietest. |

Were they new gears or used? If they were new you may be able to get the whine out. Used gears may never quiet down. I would bet the pinion depth is off. |

A good rear end guy won't need the tool, but will have one anyway. You can set the gears up properly w/o the depth tool IF you read the pattern correctly when you do the pattern check. The tool does make it easier to hit the pattern on the first try though. |
