Hello!

I'm working on my 72 Scamp, been driving it for a few days until my Orbital gel cell battery died. Seems the car is running of the battery only and not charging.

I got the alternator tested, it was good. I replaced the voltage regulator with a new one and it didn't help. The voltage gauge reads from -40 to +40. When running, mine reads a little less than the middle, around -30 on the gauge.

What can I do to solve this problem? Or what can I check? Thanks for the tips guys! :D

Alternator field has no power. It shows it's grounded according to the logic probe.

Battery has plenty of juice.

The blue cable on the voltage regulator has power.
The green wire that goes from the regulator to the field on the alternator has no power.

I've swapped in 3 different voltage regulators. No luck.

I'm stuck and my teacher seems to be stuck as well. Looks like I'll have to charge my battery every night after driving until I can sort this mess out. :?

Thanks for the tips!

Run a new wire from the regulator to the alternator field and see if it starts working.

You’ll have to trace it backwards.

Do you have voltage at the ignition terminal on the voltage regulator? If not, trace the wire back to the ignition switch and find where it’s broken.

If you do have voltage at the ignition terminal but not the field terminal - you have a voltage regulator problem.

Danny

P.S. Do you have wiring diagrams?

Figured it out. The alternator was missing a second field wire. It was a dark blue wire that I had to complete from the voltage regulator.

Now it's charging, now I have to get it to charge at low RPM. My lights dim until I give it some gas. Thanks for the help guys! :D

As for the low rpm charging most of our old cars do this. If you upgrade to the headlight relays (See a post from SS Dan on how to convert to relays) this will help alot. A new style alt. will also do the trick but they are expensive.
