After building U-Joints from Napa 419's with the u-bolt cups from a 430, I found the 420 U-Joint. Which they don't make anymore.

However, it crosses to a spicer U-Joint.

"SSD 5-353x" is the part number on my receipt.

I should have one in my hands tomorrow, so will report back on the fit!

Is that the one you installed Menko?

We have a Spicer dealer here in Salem, I've picked up two rear axle strap kits and bolts from them and the spicer kit is good quality, I'll have to pester them to see how their U-joints hold up as I'm tired of seeing
even the local mom & pop joint now stocks only Comrade Chen brand U-joints....

Sounds like a good fine, CJ. I have used the cross to late Mustang and then the Maverick 8" cups for mine.

On further inspection, the hybrid conversion I'd put together after Samoa last year developed a rough spot on one of the cups on the ford rear side.

That may have been what my vibration was.

The front joint has both cups loose in the slip yoke. They operate smoothly, but I can turn the cups easily enough still mounted up. I'd think the Yoke will need to be replaced. unless the cups are made of softer stuff...

Tomorrow I'll put a new U-Joint in the front and see if the cups still float around. Cross your fingers. :D If not I'll be yard hopping to find a better yoke.

If the Spicer part works, I'll be golden for the rear. By the numbers, it'll work.

Menko want a cookie?

Well, that ain't it.

The Ford bearing diameter needed is 1.125"

The bearing cup that comes with the 5-353x is 1.065"

I'll go back and see if they can fix that. It is also smaller by .04" in the outside dimension. Dang it. The cups outer dimension outer face to outer face measures 0.04" smaller than the one I took off.

I'll keep trying! Maybe the Spicer folks can get this figured out.
As soon as I get back from Medford I'll take the driveshaft down to Eugene and have a Ford end welded on and get it balanced. I'm tired of this...stuff.

That sounds like what I went through about a year ago. I posted on this site about trying to find an "adapter" joint, and never found one. I will be haveing a Ford end installed on my Mopar shaft, also.

You just need to buy a '72 (or so) Maverick joint with the 1.125" caps and swap them onto the later Mopar/Ford adapter joint. The Maverick joint is cheap - $15 or so. I have two of these working on my cars.

That's what I was doing Lou!

The NAPA 320 is a direct fit. Spicer showed it as a direct cross. On further inspection however, they also showed the 319 and another as direct cross overs to the same number.

The place I got the spicer will be getting me the correct cups tomorrow. Fopar just called, and has kindly agreed to grab a new slip yoke for me since the outfit that sells them has business hours that make it difficult for me to make.

Too bad NAPA's source stopped making the 320.

After Medford, problem solved.
