Post subject:  Blue smoke

I got a big problem I think. My 69 Dart slant six 225 has started emitting blue smoke out the tailpipe. Also Smoke is getting into carb through the top of the valve cover. Air filter will get saturated with oil and the engine will ultimately quit. If I remove the hose from the air cleaner cover, the motor will continue idling but quite a large volume of smoke puffs out. I think it might be the rings are gone but I am not really sure. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. NEED HELP I look like cheech and chong driving down the road.

How many miles are on this engine?
It does sound like the engine is worn-out or it has broken a compression ring or 3.

If I were in your shoes do a leak down test on each cyl. This will tell you what and which cyl are affected.

the motor is original from 69 and has 60,000 miles on it. I will try the leak down test. It seems to me might be easier to get a wrecker motor and do a straight switch rather than getting into doing rings.

60K? if that is all-- you need to do some checkiing before swapping motors.
When was the last valve adjustment?
how do the plugs look?
History of the car would help--
How mechanically inclined are you ,Lawrence

I have owned the car for ten years. My father was the original owner and purchased it new in 69. I only drive it from may to october, never seen winter. I had a valve job done 5 years/20,000 miles ago. As you can tell this car does much more resting than driving. This is why I am confused, i can't believe all of a sudden it starts doing this. I am going to inspect the valves, lifters and seats tomorrow in the daylight and do a leak down test. Hopefully i can remedy this situation without having to spend a lot of money on a ring job. I don't think i can do the rings on my own.

If you had a valve job done 20k ago be sure to take a good look at your seals. If they are cheap rubber they might have deteriorated from the long periods of sitting. I guess that wouldn't explain the smoke under your valvecover but you'll know soon enough when you do a comp. check.

It could be stuck rings. You might want to try some Marvel Mystery Oil in the crankcase and drive it some to see if they loosen up.
