This afternoon I went to look at a 1964 Valiant /6 car. It was advertised as having a 225 motor. When I looked over the engine I noted the hose immediately below the thermostat on the engine was about 1" long. (I don't know its part name). By-Pass hose? On my 76 Volare 225 motor that same hose is about 3 " long. Could it be that the motor in the 64 car isn't a 225 after all?

more like the SELLER is mistaken by the sound of it. I think you are on the right track. I would put money on the engine being a 170 c/inch.
the by-pass hose difference is a quick,easy ID of engine capacity.
use the misrepresentation of the car as a bargaining tool.

Thanks for the quick response. I did some research (should have done that before asking the question), on this site, and found the anwer in Frank Adkins' book: How to Build High Performance Chrysler Engines, Chapter 6, pgs 1 and 2, to wit: "The 170 uses a short bypass hose between the cylinder head and the water pump that measured just over an inch in length, while the 225 uses a bypass hose that is roughly twice as long."

I wasn't offended by the seller's error, but wanted to instead make sure I was correct before confronting him. I called and spoke with him in length about the error in advertising, but also advised him that the actual cubic inches of the motor didn't matter all that much. I found him receptive and I think we have struck a deal (at less than advertised price). Thanks again.

Sounds like a good deal. The 170 is a decent engine. Back in the day, my bro-in-law had a '62 Valiant with a 170 slant, Offenhauser manifold and Holley 4 bbl carb. The 170 has a short stroke, so it likes to rev. That car was actually pretty quick.
