Painting my engine right now and I want to be as complete as possible (and replace old gaskets). Is there any reason I shouldn't pull the Harmonic balancer to get at the timing chain cover? Any possible complications that could arise? Also with the engine out what would be the best way to stop the crank from turning when I try and loosen the big center bolt? Engine is out.

Thanks

Leave it in place while painting. If you remove it you will need to mask the crankshaft and seal, and also block off the annular space. You would also need to mask the balancer internal and external machined surfaces.

Just tap the center of the balancer with a hammer and wood block to slide the crankshaft as far into the block as it will go. This will prevent getting paint on the machined surface that can later slide under the outer lip of the seal.

Caution Beating on the end of the crank shaft or balancer will beat on the thrust bearing (NOT A GOOD THING). To make sure balancer is on all the way use correct instalation tool.

Pull the balancer, remove the timing chain cover,clean/paint etc. no problem.Only problem I could for see is finding a loose timing chain but then thats less of a problem now then when back together and in the car. Also be sure and re-install balancer per Doc's instructions ie,leave cover loose until balancer is seated then tighten cover bolts. As far as keeping motor from turning while removing/installing balancer perhaps something installed through flexplate, wedged against block etc? be creative and careful :)

Stop the crankshaft from turning by sticking a screwdriver through the part where the starter goes and wedge it against the flywheel so it can't turn anymore.

If its an OLD timing chain then I would replace it .
