 Post subject: Adapter source?
PostPosted: Tue Jun 18, 2002 9:39 am
In swapping the power steering pump from a '79 Aspen to my '64 Valiant, I discovered I need an adapter to hook up the return hose. The Aspen hose is 3/8" ID and the Valiant is 1/2" ID. I thought such an item would be simple to find, but I'm hitting a brick wall! Does anyone have an idea what to use, or where they might sell such an adapter? I've tried all the auto parts stores and scoured the shelves at Home Depot and Lowes.

I believe that if you can find the later steering box you can just take the return line fitting off of it and bolt it onto your box. Anyone else?

I made the last one I needed.
I brazed a couple of pieces of tubing together. (one slid inside the other then I brazed the joint)
I bet the same thing could be done with adaptors & fittings. (and may-be a pipe tap)

That's correct. The P/S return hose nozzle on the steering box comes in two sizes: Large and small. They are all interchangeable, so just go to the wrecking yard and find a P/S car that has the size of hose that your P/S pump accepts. Remove the hose from the P/S box nozzle, remove the two bolts holding the nozzle to the top of the box, and you've got it. There are two O-rings that live under the nozzle at the bolt-together surface; be sure to use new ones.

Did it and it fits great. The breakout direction is different, but it clears everything without a problem.
