 Post subject: clutchflite trans

Hi. I have a pushbutton clutchflite transmission in need of repair and was wondering if it would be work well behind a slant race motor. It’s a 727 and was a bit worried about weight and parasitic drag associated with the beefier (beefiest? it's got hemi guts) unit. The input shaft is galled where the oil pump drive rides and needs welded/reground.
Also, on the tail shaft housing there is what looks like a mounting pad 180 degrees from the trans mount on top of the case. Does anyone know what this was for? It’s a p/b case and I have found 1962-63 date codes on some of the internals if that helps.

C'mon, guys! Push me! Make me do it! Actually I am at a bit of a loss on info on this thing. B+M won't help me (it's not a supercharger for a 350 Chevy) and no one I have asked knows what I’m talking about. This is a desperate plea for information.

Looks like it is a "personal choice" decision . . .

Clutchflites are truly a "blast from the past" and you already know that the 727 will soak-up a couple of tenths just because the guts are so much bigger.

I don't really like the cable shift, short tailshaft Truck / Van case you have but that is what the "Gassers" and Slingshot Rails of the time needed to make things work.

If I had the parts I would do one of two things:

1) Stick the clutchflite set-up in front of - into a later RG 727 case with the mechanical shift linkage, slip-in rear yoke and Pass. car tailhousing.....OR

2) Sell off the stuff to a nostalgia racer and take the money and buy a nice 8 inch 904 converter.

I would love to find a clutchflite for a 904, that would be cool.

Yeah, I’ve talked to a guy who survived the "buzzsaw effect" in his Camaro. He drives an automatic now! But a clutch is more efficient than a converter and I sorta hoped that would offset some "727" power loss.
I thought I saw a thread somewhere about modifying a s/b shield for use in a slant six car. How tough is this? Anybody know? Doug, you run a four speed in your barracuda don't you? What sort of bellhousing do you run? Thanks for the info on the "mystery case!"

Hi,

I've got a 727 clutchflite also, have not used it yet, but I always wanted one. Mine was built as a chevy application (10 spline clutch hub and shorter input shaft).

I believe there is a guy in Kansas that has a slant powered clutchflite car, but I cannot remember his name. He's a real fabricator, I saw Seymour's story about his stuff in the SSRN.

I think the bellhousing/transshield will be important for safety. I'd guess a slant with a modern lightweight clutch (long style preferably) and clutchflite could work. If you have an unlimited budget, there are guys that put 904 internals in a 727 case. For that matter, you might be able to use the 727 design and make a 904 clutchflite (make two and sell Doug one!).

All that being said, its a lot more work than just using a 904 and very good converter. Price might be similar by the time you're done also.
