So I have a 1968 Plymought Valiant Signet with air shocks on the rear because of major droopage, but not Im tired of looking at the 185 60R13 pizza cutters. Im looking at going up to 14" rims probly the 4.5". Just wanting to know what people think would look good and function well. I was thinking 205 or 215 60R14 front 235 60R14 rear with cooper cobra g/ts. Eventually it will all get upgraded to BBP 15" disc brakes and 8 3/4 rear but for the mean time (2yrs roughly) im going to keep it SBP while its still a /6. |

The tire sizes you have in mind are way too wide for 4½" wide rims. You can run 195/70R14s on them, but even those are a little wide. 185/70R14s fit well on the 4½" wide rims. It might be wiser to spend money on new leaf springs before changing wheels and tires, though, especially since you have a bigger, more permanent wheel/tire upgrade in mind for the future. |

Yep. Mopar used to view tires as something to keep the car off the ground. The 185/70-14 Dan recommends is basically two sizes wider than the stock /6 tire. BFG and other sites have sections that list the min, max, and recommended rim width for their tires. IMO BFG allows a narrower rim per size than most manufacturers. The problems with running a tire on a rim that is too narrow are two-fold. 1. The tire has more of a tendency to "roll under" when cornered hard. 2. The bead is pinched which in turn causes the tread to bow up. The result is a wear pattern that looks like the tire is running over-inflated. The long and the short is that running a tire on a rim that is too narrow creates a situation where the full benefit of the wider tire is not being realized. |

Yup…it's one of those "even if you technically can, it doesn't necessarily mean you should" things.

I recently had to take off the old Ansen Sprint 14 by 7 inch wheels with 215-70-14 tires because I just couldnt get them to balance properly. So I put back on the 14 by 4.5 stock wheels with 185-75-14 tires. I know have a much better balance and can drive high speeds with no problem. I wouldnt put anything bigger than a 185 and those little wheels. |
