 Post subject: 2bbl conversion issues
PostPosted: Mon Jun 24, 2002 12:12 am
The 2bbl (Carter BBD) conversion on my '62 Lancer is great, but there are a few unresolved issues that need to be cleared up.

Air cleaner! I can't use the '70s Super Six item, because it won't clear the air conditioner compressor. I would like to use the 11" diameter "large and flat" style air cleaner used on a lot of '62-'69 1bbl slant-6s, but there were no 2bbl bases made for this air cleaner, so...now what?

My thought is to have a good welder "cut and paste" the 2bbl baseplate throat into the middle of the 1bbl baseplate, but with 2 attempts so far, I've come up with 2 real messes...sloppy, gobby weld bead all over the place, and see-through gaps (looks like sloppy gas welding).

I'm using the best of the messes right now; a '63-'66 "small and tall" 1bbl base with a 2bbl neck crudely welded in. But, with the extra height of the 2bbl, the air cleaner lid contacts the underside of the hood with this base. Not too cool, even if it does "solve" one other problem, which is that *without* this "top engine support" provided by the air cleaner hitting the hood, the 2 1/4" headpipe hits the crossmember!

Suggestions? Doc?

Sounds like you need to find a better welder!

For this kind of "tin work", I would cut & fit the pieces so they overlap each other. You could sand the overlap contact area to bare metal then braze the joint or just use a few pop rivets to hold the joint together. (no sanding needed with the pop rivet fix)

Exhaust pipe hitting something!?!, it needs to be moved. ; - )

What AC pump are you using? The 77 Slant 6 2v carb setup with AC had a air filter housing with a flatened front to clear the AC pump. I think the change to the Aluminum rotary AC pump was phased in about 1978-9. I don't know if those air filter housing have the flat front or not.
Something for you to check out. If you are using a V8 air filter for the 2v carb, then you won't have the flat front to clear the AC pump.
Oh yea, some of the Slant 6 Vans had some weird offset air filter housings. Check vans from the late 1970's through 1980's for one of those. Maybe it will help.

The original-equipment V2.

That is quite true. However, it still won't clear the A/C compressor in the '62...not by a long shot. The A/C compressor brackets were changed in '67 or so to move the compressor farther towards the driver's side of the car. This makes it easier to change the manifold gaskets and such, and allows the use of a larger air cleaner, but this bracketry won't fit/work in a '62 A-body.

Yeah, most of these are the junk C171 design. A few of them are the Sanden SD series, which is a much better compressor than the C171. I still prefer the V2, however. It is a very efficient compressor with low drag on the engine, even if it is bulkier and heavier than the later design. Note that all compressors are "rotary"...it's just that the earlier ones have pistons that go up and down, and the later ones have pistons that go forward and backwards!

Now there's an idea. I'll look for one of those.
Thanks.
