Hi all,

Does anyone know the part number of the Carter BBD 2-bbl that was used for the Super Six package in '77-'80? I have located a carb, the seller claims it is for that specific application, and says the number is 8087S. A little Googling turns up a few references to that number, but I've already been burned once (it turned out to be the 318 version), and I'd like to be sure before I buy another. Thanks for any help on this.

Roger

Hi Fab64. If you take a look at my thread Carter carb manuals with jet and metering rod sizes, you will find your carb on page 44 (of 55) in manual number 1, it is for a '77 Aspen. There you can find what jets and metering rods are correct for that carb. I have a VERY worn example of that carb on my own '77 Aspen, and unless you by a new one, I cannot help myself asking: Why do you want to buy it? Unless you are restoring to original condition, you should really take a look at the other threads about 2 barrel carbs, like this one: Best 2 Barrel Carb, and all the other links under Frequently Asked Questions - Engine near the top of contents page in this section.

There are many Carter BBDs that were used on the '76-'80 "Super Six" 2bbl 225 engine. Carburetor number depends on year, application (car/truck), transmission (auto/manual), emissions package (Federal/California/Canada/Export), and sometimes equipment (with/without air conditioning, cruise control, etc.). Keep looking, you will find a good slant-6 2bbl carb. If you have doubts about one you're looking at, post a link or some pictures on the board and you'll get help with carb ID.

(And a 318 carb isn't hard to adapt to a slant-6).

Thanks, guys.

I have been searching this site, but there's such a plethora of information that it's overwhelming, and I hadn't yet run across the links that Olaf posted. Thank you, Olaf!

And I don't necessarily want to buy a new carb. I was told by someone that the 318 version is completely different internally, and I inferred from that that it would be unsuitable for my use. If I can make this one work, that would be great.

Unfortunately, I don't have the tag that originally came on it, but here are some pics:

I bought this a few years ago as part of a "Super Six" package, including intake manifold, linkage and air cleaner. I was told the carb was for a slant 6, and only later learned that it is the 318 version.

I'm fairly happy with the way the car is currently running, except for the poor mileage it's getting (11-12 city, maybe 17 highway). Last week, I advanced my initial timing from 5 degrees to 10. I haven't been able to check mpg yet because my speedometer isn't working right now. However, I can tell by smell it's still running rich.

Unfortunately, I don't have an O2 sensor, or an exhaust gas analyzer. And when I rebuilt it, I neglected to note the size of the main jets. I will start trying to digest this new info. In the meantime, if you have any advice on which jet size I should be using, or any other recommended mods to convert it from 318 to slant 6, please let me know. Thanks again.

Roger

Yeah, you do, if you can find one. "Remanufactured" carburetors are almost all junk.

Incorrect. There are some differences, but they are mostly inconsequential. Besides, this what you're showing us looks like a slant-6 carburetor (choke lever is slant-6, air horn is slant-6). There were slant-6 carbs with throttle plate holes, that is not just a V8 thing.

It's a "reman" unit :-(

That's definitely lower than you have a right to expect with a good carburetor.

Can you use Edelbrock Performer/AVS jets and rods in the BBD? If not where can they be purchased?

What do you need to change internally in the 318 BBD?

Nothing internal. You need to adapt the choke lever.
