Everyone knows that the big drawback with the aluminium slant is its inherent weakness, and its incompatability with high compression or supercharging.
My question is: since aluminum is supposed to be easy to weld, wouldn't it be possible to weld some sort of bracing for the barrels, or fit thicker iron sleeves to the cylinder bores along with smaller pistons? Or is that asking for disaster...

A friend of mine, Jeff C. welded 4 or 5 pieces of aluminum keystock around the top of the cylinders, but he has yet to fire it up. He did that about 10 yrs ago, and I couldn't even guess when he will install the engine, let alone light it off.
