I bought a NEW melling oil pump and filled it full of KY and it still will not pump any oil. I filled the filter with oil also. I hooked up a guage and it reads zero and I've cranked it for a long time. What am I missing???

Wait, you put a water based personal lubricant in your oil pump?

Uh...ruh...yeah, what Josh said. Vaseline or grease is "yes", KY or anything else is NO.

The oil stand pipe goes to the engine, the diagonal passage goes to the pump gears.put some thick oil in the diagonal passage and rotate the engine backwards several turns. If you took the cover off the pump, you should have checked all the rotor clearances and compared them to the service manual.5 years ago,I went "round and round"with a local parts store that sold me a melling pump that had bad clearences from the factory.

Is the oil pick-up tube correct and properly installed?
loose or cracked thread at the block to pick-up interface point can make for difficult priming. (sucks air, not oil)

So... did you change-out the drive gear on that new Melling pump?
If not, the odds of drive gear failure within the first 1000 miles is high.

This 1st new oil pump was bad. I cound never get it to register pressure with a guage. So they warrantied it and I put in another new pump and finally got it primed and it shows 50+ when it revs up. This is a stock motor and I didn't change oil pump gear. So it goes to show you new pumps can be bad.

I read about the oil pump gear problem here but I thought that would be fixed by now. Does Doc still have those hardened gears for sale? I'm gathering parts for a rebuild and will need one I guess.
