I'm new to the Mopar fold with my recent purchase of a 79 Aspen wagon, with a slant six and 4- speed. I have several questions, but I'll start with the suspension. This car has been sitting for a while and the thing wanders all over the place when driving down the road. It also seems to lean over to the passenger side. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I've never dealt with torsion bars before. my other main question is cold starting. It does not want to start for the first time of the day. If I end up pouring a little gas in the carb, it starts right up first try and stays running, and I can shut it off and restart it everytime after. Any ideas? Thank you in advance for anyhelp you guys can give me.

Welcome on the board. You'll want to get the three books described in this thread as quickly as you can. Tune-up parts and technique suggestions in this thread. Carburetor operation and repair manuals and links to training movies and carb repair/modification threads are posted here for free download. And the engine needs periodic valve adjustment. Your cold-start problem is probably caused by a faulty choke system; read up on it in the carburetor manuals linked above and in this article; if pieces are missing or broken from your original choke system, you will have good results by simply installing one of the Electric choke kits — a #1234 if you have a 1-barrel carburetor, or a #1232 if yours is a "Super Six" 2-barrel.

The wandering and leaning means you've got to get the whole undercar works — the steering linkage and the suspension — carefully checked. In addition to plain old wear on components, these F-body cars like yours have a suspension design not as strong as the A-body (Dart/Valiant) cars; there are mounts and parts that tend to break or deform. This is (obviously) a safety issue and needs fixed right away.

I thought it might be the choke. Thanks for the link for the electric choke kits. My original choke is still there but looks pretty bad. As far as the suspension goes, will I need an alignment rack, a frame rack or can these problems be seen on an average lift? Having never messed with a torsion bar set up what do I need to look out for during tear down. I've done coil spring suspensions before but I've never done one of these. Are all these things you've mentioned about the suspension fixable or does it start getting into frame damage Where the car becomes a total loss? Thank you very much for the info you have given me. Its given me a direction to head in.
