The cord is used in conjunction with the piston to keep the valves from falling into the engine while the keepers are off.

Two other ways to do it;

1. Get an air fitting to install in place of the spark plug. Use a regulator, and hold around 30 PSI of air pressure on each cylinder as you pull the valve springs. Follow hantayo's instructions on removal of the springs. Do not let the pressure go while you have the keepers off. You'll be pulling the head if that happens.

2. Remove the head and follow hantayo's instructions for spring removal.

"cord" is also know as "rope" or "line" or "sheet" depending on what context it is being used in. I can understand the confusion with translating from "English". Too many word to represent the same thing... and different "slang" used too..

Keep a close eye on the keepers when you remove them, they tend to end up where they should not be (like the oil pan :oops: )

The engine, which I was involved - the valve did not fall in principle. Rested on the pistons

I use a length of vacuum hose and cram it into the cylinder on compression stroke.
