Post subject:  holley 1945 trouble

After a winter of remaining mostly idle with less than 1 gallon of gas in it (started up periodically and let idle, or made tool runs to my rented garage 2 blocks away), I drove my van in the spring to pick my wife up from the tire place while her tires were mounted.

I ran out of gas, bought 2 gallons in a can, started it up (w/ether) and it would not idle.

I eventually ran it long enough to burn off the worst of the winter tank swill. It still hesitated under load.

After driving at highway speeds for 5 minutes it'd stall out then only start with ether, and not run under load with the air cleaner in place.

I got it home and have not done much with it since (apart from tool runs and periodic startups).

Runs better with no air cleaner (too rich?) and hesitates when I punch it (accelerator pump?)

Could I just have gunk sticking the float and interfering with the accelerator pump function?

(it was professionally rebuilt 18 months ago, or so).

I guess I will get a rebuild kit, clean it and reassemble using just the pump cup and gaskets, leaving the balance of the kit alone.

Is there anything easier I could try? (I did run a bunch of carb cleaner through it while running, and it did improve a little for a while--nothing I know of that it can do for the accelerator pump or the float).

Any ideas?

Sounds like a good coating of shellac. Tear it down, clean it up, and rebuild it like it's a virgin never been touched carb. No sense having spare parts lying around.
