Post subject: | forward gears not working in automatic transmission |
I have a 1965 valiant slant six with automatic transmission. Today, the forward three gears stopped working unless I rev the engine to over 1500 rpm, but, the transmission works fine in reverse. I was told that it might be the forward pump in the transmission and it would need a complete tear down to fix. Does this sound like the case? Should I try to find a used transmission or have this one rebuilt? Advice? |

I have had a similar problem in a transaxle. It got rebuilt. Had something to do with the clutches being messed up, so they didnt grab until they had a fair amount of pressure. It's a teardown type of repair. |

The rear clutch is used for all forward gears so a wild guess would be that there is some problem with the rear clutch, but there are other reason also. The accumulator might be sticking, hydraulic pressure might be too low or valve body leakage or something else. Have you checked the oil level in the tranny ? |

The only two quick, and easy fixes are low fluid level, or possible shift linkage maladjustment. All other mechanical causes require disassembly and inspection. Look up in your factory service manual under transmission; “Service Diagnosisâ€, for the full scoop. |
