hello. after a few months on other projects, I am back to the slant finally. please tell me if this a good idea or bad.

i was reading the oil mod article and decided to use a junk block to drill into the oil galley to open the passage intersections for 2 and 3 mains. they were both about 40% blocked off. there seems to me plenty of thickness on block to thread for a plug. somebody probably has done this already. my last slant build (20 years ago) at about 50,000 miles had cam lobe failure so i was pondering how to get more oil to the cam and lifter area.

here's the idea, good or bad.

using 1/4 npt fittings with hose barbs, threaded in the big end with a 1/8 npt tap to receive a nozzle. following photos demonstrate inside of fitting having threads, i am looking for the proper nozzles. intend to use low profile, low pressure and low volume 120 degree flat fan nozzles.






drilled block on curved area directly above cam and tapped 1/4npt and installed fitting aiming spray directly at the cam. and also tapped hole in oil galley 1/4npt to use for pressurized oil supply to nozzles. will connect with rubber hose and tees. (block upside down on bench in photo)





nozzle for 3 and 4 cylinder lobes will be installed just behind the dist. mount flange and will be spraying between the in. and ex. lobes for #4 and should get the pump drive gears as well, and the #3 has the drain hole from the lifter valley. nozzles for 1 and 2, 5 and 6 installed in middle of that section between mains.

do you think cracks would be an issue?

I would have grooved the lifter bores and put stand pipes in the lifter galley so that oil drained down onto the cam at each lifter. The Comp Cams tool is about $138 and would do many engines. http://www.compcams.com/products/335-353.pdf

Cam lobe failures are sufficiently rare I feel the gravity feed oil would be sufficient.

i agree, thats a much better plan and a good tool to have. maybe my machine shop will be able to do that job. well, it was fun drilling all the holes last night anyway, had nothing better to do. and still plan to drill the oil galley on the actual block being rebuilt to clean those areas out for better flow. thanks Joshua.

I was able to use a dremel and a diamond tip cutter to grind a groove on the non thrust side of the lifter bore for added oiling. I also added the stand pipes and cut a groove in the camshaft for full-time upper end oiling.

I use a Brake Cylinder Hone on all 12 Lifter Bores and Use the Stand offs that doc suggests in the playing with blocks article.
