 Post subject: Somebody Slap Me...

Ok, so it's been 10 years since I bought my Duster. It is a 74 Space Duster, /6 auto. Now, keep in mind I was 16 when I bought it... So I gut the car, put on a 'glass front end, and (gulp) donate the / to a local scrapyard, trans and all. Now, through the passage of time, I see the error of my ways and decide that a big block isn't the way to go. So I have a car ready for another /. Well, my question is, which year(s) would be the best to build for a bracket bomber? Obviously I got rid of a forged crank engine, but does it matter with these like it does with V8's? I am gonna run an auto, but change to floor shift. If anyone in Southeast Michigan (Detroit west side suburbs) has one for sale, trade or otherwise, please let me know. The car is needing to get finished... Anyways, any info you can send this poor soul will be thoroughly digested and apprieciated. Oh yeah, any opinions on 4bbl manifolds. I have the DC and MP engine books, and they have an offenhauser and of course the MP as examples, and it doesn't seem as if the MP is made anymore. I heard that someone whos name is familiar to this page has hyperpak manifolds recasted...

As they say, I've been there and run that.... always had the most fun with the Slant.

Read-up and ask questions and by all means, get a SL6 up and running in your car.
As for the Hyper-Pak casting project, sold that off to Clifford back in 1998, they are selling them for $299.00 so that could be an option for you.

Ps. as redemption, I did have a beautiful 79 Duster that I drove back and forth to Ferris State when I was in college, every weekend, then a friend of mine drove to Northwestern College in Lima,every weekend, together we put over 100,000 on it, and it still ran awesome. Oh yeah, that was a Super Six. All he ever did was put a valve cover gasket and adjust the valves. Wish my "new" cars were that reliable...

Someone in Akron Ohio keeps positng a rebuilt /6 shortblock still in the crate on ebay. It looks like it will go for about $400

If I had a car (instead of a pickup) I would get the cliford Repo hyperpack manifold and build according to the slant sickness artical (Hotrod mag)I might add I don't regret forking out the dough for the Eggy custom valves, having milled a tenth of the head it was sure nice to have some oversized valves the original lenghth saved on retainers and locks and a good head guy saved me from buying custom push rods. but, If from what I've read here ,if I were to build an engine with a "un" milled head say for a stroker or boosted induction my machinist tells me he could set me up cheaper with the longer stock Phord valves. Ive had the same truck 20 years(dayly driver) ran it stock with the super? six setup for along while, stock valves ported head ,mild cam/ headers /4bl maybe12-13 years and now with more headwork and oversized valves.the best advice I can give is spend time(learn to do the porting) if you haven't allready and spend money on the head/valves to let the cam work.In thirty years, yes ,someone, is going to buy into a retirement condo by selling a Duster with matching numbers ,but for sure ,You will have had ,...allot of fun. enjoy, Bruce
