Using a laser thermometer at the sending unit it measures about 150*, the temp gauge never climbs above the second line on the left. Is this normal or should I look into getting a hotter thermostat? I am in NY and it was probably like 55* outside today. I took the temperature after driving it for a while and then letting it idle for a few minutes.

A 195° thermostat is fine, but 180° is alright if it makes you fell better. Hotter is better for the engine. Too cold and the cylinders wear, the oil sludges up and fuel economy suffers.

It's a 1970 duster, 225 with about 52,000 miles. I don't know what thermostat is in it now
