It works fine until it warms up, and then throws error code 8. It never did this before, with the old LC-1 controller , but then I suspect it was never quite right.

Error code 8 is either a bad sensor, or too hot sensor. Since it works fine again once it cools down, I suspect it will work if I keep the sensor cooler. They suggest moving it further from the engine, but for now, I have run out of cable. And it is already further away than they suggest as the minimum. I told you this turbo is hot. Unless Inovate sells a nice harness style extension, with matching connectors at each end, it will mean soldering in an extension. I can do this, but first will try the heat sink they recommend. They suggest a copper or bronze plate with a hole drilled in it and bent away at about a 45 degree angle on each side. This is trapped between the sensor and the bung as a large washer.

I have no copper or bronze on hand, but can make a sink of Aluminum that would have multiple fins on it. I could mount it so that the air flows over and through the fins. Do you think this would be more or less effective than the copper or bronze?

Aluminum with fins would be more effective than copper or bronze without.

What about aiming a fan at it?

Thanks Ed. I am glad you think this might work. The fan could be a back up plan. I was wondering if the exhaust got too hot for the aluminum. According to the trouble code chart, this error code is set off when the sensor gets over 900 degrees, which is pretty high, given that the sensor is all the way down at the rear of the wheel well opening. I would estimate it at 3 feet at least. The turbo down pipe goes towards the front of the engine first, and then swings down and back, so it is as 1.5 long as the engine + the vertical drop.


Anyway, I can make a sandwich or three rectangles of 1/16 aluminum and bend each piece up a bit out away from the center, rivet it all together, and then drill the proper sized hole for the sensor to fit through.

I think I'd go with the aluminum, too. Al melts at about 1250-1350*F, so you should be OK, as long as you don't spike the temp too high. If you discover that the fins start sagging on you, then you might want to fab one up from brass or copper.

I made and installed the heat sink, and took it for a tuning spin this afternoon. It worked fine until I stopped to change some settings, and while it idled, the error code popped up again. So, I drove to get gas, and during the time it took to pump gas, the sensor cooled off enough to come back on line correctly. I proceeded to drive around for 23 miles, and it never stopped working after that. It was getting cooler outside as I drove.

If it fouls up again I may take the steps to move the sensor further back in the pipe. The sink did not melt, yet.

Sam check the Innovate forums. When I was browsing them many moons ago there was a firmware upgrade that was supposed to prevent problematic codes. Yours may not have shipped with the latest firmware? Just guessing.

I've seen pictures of the same sensor installed less then a foot after the head - I wonder if there's something else triggering your error code.

That would work if I could figure out how to tighten it down. There is a special socket, I think to take these in and out. I do not own one. It is funny it only sent that code one time. What an enormous aid that was in tuning. I had forgotten how fabulous it is to know exactly what the AF ratio is.

There is an instability in the AF ratio now that jumps in after the engine has run for about half an hour. It goes a point leaner all of a sudden. I am going to make a separate thread about this later so we can discuss it properly. I checked the fuel pressure, and that is not an issue at this point. It is something else. Later.
