I have a buddy with a 1983 /6 that was rebuilt 20,000 miles ago and it has the Racer Brown cam that is somewhere around .450 lift but I can't remember the duration. I am sure somebody here is familiar with it...

Anyways, I have a 1980 4dr. Diplomat that has a destroyed /6. I want to put the aforementioned /6 into my Diplomat. I think the .450 is to much cam for my stock lock-up converter but he thinks it will be fine. That cam has a slight chop to it. The engine will have a 2bbl on it and will probably end up with a header (or larger exhaust anyways). I have a Mopar performance 435 lift that I think will go a lot better with the lockup converter and stock rear end gear. The Mopar cam is something like 215 at .050 so it will give a power increase and still work with well with what I have. I want an increase of power with reasonable gas mileage. The head has been shaved .060.

Thoughts or suggestions???...even though I am thinking about going .090 or .100 on the head.

I have used a lot of Racer Brown cams but always with a stick trans. Looking at the list of grinds I have the only one with .450 lift is the ST2 which I have been very pleased with as a street strip cam. It has 260 advertised duration and 218@.050. If you do not plan to loosen up the converter I don't think I would use anything more than that MP .435 cam. There might also be other Racer Brown grinds with .450 lift but they are likely to have even more duration than the ST2 that I am used to. If you don't have them, I think you would be more pleased with some small diameter headers like the Clifford shorties than a cam change.

I second the MP 0.436" cam for a stock converter. You might get away with that RB cam if you install it around 100 deg centerline. If the motor is all together, why not just drop it in and try it? You can swap/degree cams later.
